Research and teaching on the history of China.

ABOUT ME

I am an historian of modern China working in the Department of History at the University of York.

My research interests centre on the political and social history of China in the ‘Mao-era' 1949-1976. I’m particularly interested in how ordinary people lived through this tumultuous time.

My current book project 'Decolonisation at the Margins' exlpores how the end of the foreign presence in China was experienced by historically marginalised groups, including Chinese factory workers, non-elite foreigners, mixed-nationality (Chinese-foreign) married couples, Westernised Chinese elites and Russian refugees.

I'm also fascinated by China’s connections with the wider world and especially with Britain. My publications include works on Sino-British relations, decolonisation and social history in Shanghai, revolutionary road-renaming, ‘How to be a Good Communist’ and how China directed propaganda outwards to the wider world.

I am a co-founder and co-director of the York Asia Research Network, a thriving research group comprising over 150 staff and student members.
